About Us

Electronic Communities for Mathematics Instruction (eCMI) is an NSF-funded project housed at Education Development Center. EDC is a nonprofit international research and development organization dedicated to improving the quality, effectiveness, and equity of education in the United States and in more than 50 countries.

2013-14: Rapid Prototyping sessions

Through the 2013-14 school year, eCMI conducted 8 2-hour sessions for groups of teachers in Grades 6-12. We used the information to inform our main study, the implementation of our Pilot program.

2014-15: Pilot Study

Through the 2014-15 school year, eCMI will conducted a series of nine 3-hour sessions of a single math content course, delivered online on a regular basis. Four groups of 4-7 teachers in four states, including a table leader at each site, participated. Additionally, all teachers and table facilitators used social media to discuss topics relavant to the teaching of mathematics in between sessions.

Teachers reported enjoying the course and feeling supported enough to incorporate more discussion and immersion in their classroom. Data analysis is ongoing.

2015: Data Analysis

Many types of data were collected, including teacher surveys, interviews, video footage, as well as a pre- and post- assessment of teachers' Mathematical Habits of Mind. Analysis is ongoing.
